Oscar Winners 2017

Wow. Well, awards season came to a close last night in what was a largely predictable, fairly run of the mill Oscars ceremony until THAT stunning last minute twist. Not only was it a huge shock that Barry Jenkins' Moonlight managed to upset the overwhelming favourite La La Land to take Best Picture, but the way it happened was as dramatic as any moment in the history of the Academy Awards. After being handed the wrong envelope, presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway bumbled around before announcing La La Land as the winner - only it wasn't, and midway through the speeches, the Oscars had to be handed over to the Moonlight crew.

Best Picture was Moonlight's third win of the night after Jenkins took home the adapted screenplay gong for his script and Mahershala Ali win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, with Lion's Dev Patel failing to cause the upset that some had predicted. La La Land ultimately wasn't the juggernaut it had seemed to be, taking home only six of its fourteen nominations. Those six awards are impressive - taking home gold for Best Song, Best Score, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Actress for Emma Stone and Best Director for Damien Chazelle, the youngest ever winner in this category - but after missing out on Best Picture and a host of other awards, the La La Land team are bound to be slightly disappointed.

Elsewhere, the love was spread amongst the other big players of awards season with Manchester by the Sea scoring expected wins in Best Actor (Casey Affleck) and Best Original Screenplay, Hacksaw Ridge scoring wins in Best Sound Mixing and Best Film Editing, Fences getting a Best Supporting Actress trophy for Viola Davis and Arrival taking home a surprise Best Sound Editing gong. Hidden Figures, Hell or High Water and Lion ultimately ended the night empty handed despite Best Picture nominations.
