The Highs & Lows of the Oscars 2017

The 89th Academy Awards provided a night of few real shocks and not many memorable moments until a stunning last minute twist that instantly made it one of the most memorable Oscars telecasts of all time. People will be talking about that envelope snafu for years to come. You can check out a list of the night's winners here, but check out the highs and lows of a typically up-and-down ceremony below...

Oscar Winners 2017

Wow. Well, awards season came to a close last night in what was a largely predictable, fairly run of the mill Oscars ceremony until THAT stunning last minute twist. Not only was it a huge shock that Barry Jenkins' Moonlight managed to upset the overwhelming favourite La La Land to take Best Picture, but the way it happened was as dramatic as any moment in the history of the Academy Awards. After being handed the wrong envelope, presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway bumbled around before announcing La La Land as the winner - only it wasn't, and midway through the speeches, the Oscars had to be handed over to the Moonlight crew.

Final Oscar Predictions 2017

Awards season seems to get longer and longer every year, with this year’s race finding its front runners last summer and going through the motions ever since. Some of those frontrunners are vulnerable at this point though, so while a La La Land sweep is on the cards, there are a few races that will still hold some intrigue at this Sunday’s ceremony.

Oscar Nominations 2017: Full List

Well, we all expected La La Land to rack up an impressive amount of Oscar nominations and it has done so this Tuesday, to record-equalling effect. Damien Chazelle's sparkling musical matched All About Eve and Titanic's 14 nominations, confirming beyond any reasonable doubt that it will take home the Best Picture prize on Oscar night.

Oscar Nominations 2017: The Predictions

By the time the eventual ceremony rolls around, the Academy Awards are so predictable that much of the excitement around individual categories has waned. The nominations are a far more exciting prospect, with more surprises in store. Though a lot of categories look largely set in stone, there are a number of potential spoilers that could shake things up. Will Nocturnal Animals’ Aaron Taylor-Johnson continue a surprising awards season run? Can Deadpool follow-up some guild nominations with a shock screenplay nod, or even Best Picture? Is Hidden Figures’ whopping box office take enough to force it into Best Picture?

Oscar Winners 2016

Awards season is finally over for another year and last night, the least-predictable Oscars in years obliterated office pools and pundits predictions by going in some interesting directions, some good, some bad. For me, I was 14/24 from my predictions, which is an all time low. You can thank Mad Max's technical sweep and Sam Smith's surprise Best Song win for that. Regardless, here is the full list of Oscar winners from last night's ceremony...

Final Oscar Predictions 2016

It's that time of year again, where all of the prognostication and precursor awards are out of the way and the big show is almost upon us: the Oscars. This Sunday, Hollywood's leading lights will descend upon the Dolby Theatre in LA to lavish each other with praise and little gold statuettes.

The Oscars are broken. There’s no escaping the fact that the Academy and their system for awarding the best the movie world has to offer is far from perfect. From all of the politicking, positioning and campaigning to the limited scope of the films in the race and of course the startling lack of diversity among the nominees, it’s clear that a lot could be done to fix this very flawed system.

Oscar Nominations 2016: The Snubs & Surprises

It wouldn't be Oscar nominations day without a little shock horror at the beloved actors or films that missed out on a nomination, or the flimsy Oscar-bait that somehow stole their spot. As sure as Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs will screw up someone’s name (Alejandro G. who!?), movie fans will get upset over the Oscar nominations.

Oscar Nominations 2016: Full List

It's mid-January and that can mean only one thing in the movie calendar: Oscar nominations. This afternoon (or morning in the US), John Krasinski joined Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs to announce the nominees for the 88th Academy Awards, and butcher some names in the process. Dominating the field this year is Alejandro G. Innaritu's The Revenant with 12 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor for Leonardo Di Caprio who - internet memes would have you believe - is long overdue a win.
